Evolution of Pharmacology


Pharmacology is the study of drugs and their interactions with living systems.(Lehne , 2007)


The meaning of Greek word , “Pharmakos” is medicine or drug and “logos” means a study.


The history of drugs , appear to predate civilization.The primitive person’s belief was that disease were caused , by evil spirits.

Since the down of civilization,herbal drugs and other naturally sourced materials have been used,for alleviation of human suffering.Drug was made with herbs or materials like charcoal and clay.

The Sumerians dwelling in the valleys of Tigiris and Euphrates,rivers 5000 years ago.Used compounded medicine made of salt,roots, seeds and bark of willow.

A Babylonian  clay tablet was discovered in 700 BC and is gives an account of a large number of herabal medicines.

The oldest descriptions on drugs came from India and China.

The great chinise materia medica pertaining to herbals was written probably in 2737 B.C.

Ayurved were written between 2500 – 3000 B.C. in India.
Ayurved is asystem of traditional medicine native to the Indian Subcontinent and practiced in other parts of  the world as a form of alternative medicine.

Francosis Magendie (1732-1855)



Francosis Magendie a physiologist can also be,consideredbas the first Pharmacologist.He isolated strychnine and , investigated the action of several pure chemical in animals.

Ostwald Schmiedeberg (1838-1921)


Ostwald Schmiedeberg was offered the first chair of professor of  pharmacology at the university at Dorpat (Germany).He can truly be regarded as the Father of Modern Pharmacology.

John Jacob Abel (1856-1938)


He was the student of, Ostwald Schmiedeberg.He sperheaded the subject of  pharmacology in different parts of the world.He was considered , as the Father of Pharmacology in U.S.A.

Arthur R.Cushney (1866-1926)

He was the first chair of pharmacology in Britain.

Alfred Joseph Clark (1885-1941)

He made significantbcontributions in understanding principles of General Pharmacology.

Sir Ramanath Chopra (1882-1972)

He was recognized as the Father of  Indian Pharmacology.
